EMO NIGHT: BROOKLYN
When: 9 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $10 advance/$15 day of show
Where: The Intersection, Grand Rapids
Emo Night: Brooklyn is an emo/punk/social media party. Back in 2015, two best buds, Alex Badanes and Ethan Maccoby, decided to recreate the fun party times they had as teens and college students, moving it out of basements and dorm rooms and into a Brooklyn performance space. These parties proved to be wildly popular, and have even inspired competitors in Los Angeles and Boston.
It used to take 10 years for a trend to filter from New York City to Grand Rapids, but social media and millennial entrepreneurs have reduced the road to cool: Badanes and Maccoy take their Emo Night parties on tour around the country, and now the party is landing right in the middle of The Intersection.
Let Fallon Masterson of Vanyaland.com explain: “Across the country, Emo Night: Brooklyn plays rooms from 300 to 1,000 in capacity, depending on Badanes and Maccoby’s location. The party operates like a roving rave, and they usually bring a guest DJ… Maccoby and Badanes are the on-stage party hosts, jumping to keep the crowd hyped, and people face the stage like they’re watching a set at Coachella. At a point, black balloons may even descend from the ceiling, stamped with the evening’s hashtag…” Singing along is a big part of the night.
Go while the party is hot. The next East Coast trend is scheduled to arrive in about 18 months.

Benjamin Cohen and Sam Woldenberg form a “future beat/psych jazz/electronic duo” and are based in Toledo, where these three bands converge again on Saturday. Multimedia instrumental band Saltbreaker of Grand Rapids opens.
