West Michigan's music scene
Grand Rapids singer, rapper and R&B artist Callab poured a lot of emotions into his upcoming new studio album, “Assorted 61X Pack.”
“My mother passed away (last December) and I locked myself in the studio and just worked,” he told Local Spins. “This is why most of the songs are pretty short, as my attention span was — as is a lot of the world. It felt fitting.”
It also feels like an all-star affair, with guest appearances by Michigan hip hop stalwarts E-Will, J.Rob, Lady Ace Boogie, Jance, Cheeze Weez, Rebel Kuzco, Cheezy Scott, 85WasHere and Balize (described by Callab as “an artist with a burgeoning career”) who help give the project a genre-crossing milieu.
In particular, the ultra-collaborative single, “Citizen,” has resonated with fans as a tribute to Grand Rapids. (Scroll down for the “Citizen” video.)
As a result, those attending Friday’s album-release show (now Oct. 30) at Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids — part of Listening Room’s outdoor “Listening Lawn” series — are sure to be treated to a lively affair, with sets by Callab, Rijiri and Mel-V Collective.
“People can expect high energy, an artist being himself, great music, great vibes, musicians and sound,” insisted Callab, aka Eric Mical Carter, who’s dedicating the performance to his mother “because she was my everything.”
“They can expect … engagement, excitement and an unreal vibe.”
Tickets for the socially distanced 8 p.m. show presented by Lady Ace Boogie and AB are $70 per pair. Get tickets and details online here.
The evening will also feature a Halloween costume contest with a $100 grand prize. Attendance is limited to 120 people; doors open at 6:30 p.m.
There’s more on the docket across West Michigan, including Third Nature Brewing’s one-year anniversary bash in Rockford on Saturday, though live music opportunities are beginning to wane as colder weather sets in.
