The summer concert and festival announcements just keep coming. Interlochen’s eclectic lineup ranges from Trace Adkins to Brian Wilson; Wheatland’s folk schedule boasts some icons of the genre; Founders Fest’s big party will feature G. Love, plus Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk.
Grand Rapids-area vacationers will have extra incentive to travel to northern Michigan this summer: Interlochen’s 2013 Summer Arts Festival lineup will feature ZZ Top, The Avett Brothers, Kris Kristofferson, Josh Groban, Melissa Etheridge, Harry Connick Jr. and other compelling touring artists.

Founders Brewing Co. today also announced its lineup for what Founders’ Mark Dorich calls its “biggest party of the year,” aka Founders Fest on June 22, with Philadelphia’s groovy G. Love & Special Sauce and Man Man, New Orelans-based Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Minnesota electro-rock outfit Roster McCabe and a host of Michigan acts, including Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys and Alexis.
And folk folks can even start making plans for this September’s Wheatland Music Festival in Remus, with the announcement of impressive headliners such as Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn, The Duhks, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys and The Rev. Payton’s Big Damn Band.
The concert schedule for Kresge Auditorium at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Interlochen, southwest of Traverse City, kicks off with Brandi Carlile and The Lone Bellow on June 25 and closes out on Aug. 12 with singer Josh Groban and the Traverse Symphony Orchestra.
The series strives to find “relevant offerings from multiple genres,” according to Rory Baker, Interlochen Center for the Arts’ Interim Director of Presents, with country, pop, classical and rock artists as well as dance, family programming and theater. And that lineup helps attract many travelers to northern Michigan from downstate, he added.
As has been the case in past years, a few Interlochen shows – Carlile, Connick, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Miller Band and Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” – overlap with the 30-concert schedule announced Thursday by Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids.
But while Meijer Gardens features The Beach Boys (with Mike Love and Bruce Johnston) on Aug. 1, Interlochen will host Brian Wilson (with Al Jardine, David Marks and Wilson Phillips) on July 23. And a real highlight could be the appearance by the energetic, high-flying folk/bluegrass/rock group The Avett Brothers at Interlochen on July 1.
Here’s the Interlochen schedule, the Founders Fest lineup and the preliminary lineup for the Sept. 6-8 Wheatland festival. Tickets for Interlochen shows go on sale at 9 a.m. April 19, the same day advance tickets are available for Founders Fest; tickets for Wheatland go on sale to the general public on June 1.
