With roots in Michigan’s folk community and Washington D.C.’s punk scene, the Nashville-based duo oozes a unique musical buzz. Their tour stops at Grand Rapids’ SpeakEZ Lounge tonight, Kalamazoo Thursday.

Adrian and Meredith Krygowski came from disparate musical backgrounds, which may explain why it’s so difficult to pigeonhole their music.

Meredith, a native of Ann Arbor, grew up around folk music and attending the Blissfest and Wheatland music festivals. Adrian played punk rock in Washington D.C., dyed his hair blue and embraced the whole DIY (do it yourself) music scene.
What emerged when the married couple started playing music together a few years ago was a mind-bending mishmash of gypsy jazz, fiddle music, punk rock, jazz, folk, swing music and even polkas, considering both musicians are of Polish descent.
“We’ve hired people and paid them a lot of money to try to figure this out. Nobody knows,” jokes Meredith, who plays the fiddle. “It’s folk and there are so many elements that are folk. We look at this new Americana genre and we don’t quite fit in it. We’re not traditional folk but I think we still fit more in that range.”
Adrian, who plays guitar, says it just came naturally to “smash those two ideas” together to create the duo’s distinctive sound — something displayed during this week’s edition of Local Spins Live on News Talk 1340 AM (WJRW). Listen to the podcast here, with a video below.
