Descending once again upon the tiny community of Rothbury, north of Muskegon, 40,000 wild and exuberant fans created a special vibe on Thursday as the four-day festival kicked off in glorious fashion.
Electric Forest is the sort of resplendent, bizarre and out-of-this-world-and-into-something-magical musical festival where attendees are more than pleased to pose for photographers — or even go out of their way to be part of a permanent (or even temporary) confirmation that, yes, they were there.

The 2015 edition of Electric Forest at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, featuring more than 100 bands playing nine stages inside and outside the art- and light-laden Sherwood Forest, has attracted 40,000 devotees from across the country and beyond, reveling in mostly EDM and jam bands over four days, but mostly just being part of what they see as a special “immersive” musical experience.
So beyond the high-profile, marquee names such as The String Cheese Incident, Skrillex, Bassnectar, Kaskade, Flume and Big Gigantic, which really get the festival rolling on its stages tonight in earnest, Electric Forest is about the people who make this the colorful event that its become.
Here’s just a taste in a photo gallery from Local Spins photographer Anthony Norkus from Thursday’s opening day and night. Return to Local Spins Saturday for more photos and a concert roundup, including a spotlight on Michigan acts performing at this year’s festival.
