West Michigan's music scene
Near the end of California indie-rock/pop band Young the Giant’s main set at Grand Rapids’ GLC Live at 20 Monroe on Saturday, lead singer and Ann Arbor native Sameer Gadhia unleashed the jaunty, dance-fueled “Tightrope”:
“I’m dancing on a tightrope, no time to mess around,” he sang. “Just trying to let my mind go, I’m never coming down.”
The song immediately followed “Dancing in the Rain” from the band’s latest album, “American Bollywood” with the apropos lyrics: “It’s good to be back home, I’ve been waiting for this.”
Suffice to say the band’s devoted West Michigan fans had been waiting for this, too, cheering the band’s tightrope dancing and music that one California reviewer recently described as “dynamic and dramatic.”
The concert was a fundraiser for Hope Network, a Grand Rapids nonprofit that assists people with disabilities live independently. View the full set list here.
It was “good to be back home” for the opening act as well: Brother Elsey, a rootsy Michigan-bred band of brothers that called Grand Rapids home for several years before moving to Nashville, clearly reveled in their return to GLC Live at 20 Monroe, passionately delivering their vocals after releasing two new songs last month.
That same night just a couple blocks away, Mammoth WVH — fronted by Wolfgang Van Halen — fired up The Intersection’s Elevation with help from Nita Strauss, while about 28 miles away, blues guitar whiz Eric Gales unleashed his ferocious licks at Holland’s Park Theatre (where he even wandered into the crowd to electrify fans).
Saturday’s shows just scratched the surface of another intriguing week of live music across the region, including the uber-energetic pop-rock band Honey Revenge at The Stache, country pop’s Dylan Scott at GLC Live at 20 Monroe, progressive rock jam band Papadosio at Elevation, DJ Apashe at The Intersection, and roots music singer-songwriters Valerie June, Thao, Rachael Davis and Yasmin Williams at the Calvin University Chapel in Grand Rapids.
