The Vibe: Located in the North Monroe district north of downtown Grand Rapids, Rocky’s is a popular hangout for a fairly young crowd and many musicians, a narrow tavern with a cozy atmosphere. Food is available until midnight, with the hamburgers and Greek fries favored by many. And get this: Rocky’s gives away free bacon between 10 and midnight every Wednesday night – while supplies last, 21-and-older only.
Bands and solo acts play at the far end of the bar near the staircase and restrooms. While that might not seem an ideal set-up, Rocky’s provides an opportunity for lots of new bands and fledgling talent to test their mettle. As open-mic host Sam Kenny puts it: “It’s fun to play there because it’s extremely non-threatening. It’s a divey, small place, the regulars are friendly and expecting music, and the stage is only elevated a few inches and right up against the first table.”
The Music: Acoustic open mic session hosted by Sam Kenny, 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tuesdays (18-and-older, all musicians, styles welcome); live (mostly rock) bands, 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursdays and Saturdays; DJ Colin Clive, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays, with The Moonrays playing 7-10 p.m. two Fridays each month.
Coming Up: 9 p.m. Saturday, American Zombie Inquisition, Dead Eye Zack and JOE
