The vibe, as always, had all the markings and celebratory power of a festival headlining set.
The audience, as always, brimmed with vibrant Umphrey’s McGee diehards who know all the words to the South Bend-bred jam band’s most obscure songs, fans who crave that aforementioned festival milieu and a fair number of prog-rock geeks enamored of the six-member band’s instrumental acumen and improvisational aptitude.
And the band, as always, didn’t disappoint, launching the evening under overcast skies with “Day Nurse,” “Alex’s House,” “Cemetery Walk” and “Miss Tinkle’s Overture,” thereby commemorating just a small sampling of UM’s 25-year legacy as a genre-shifting powerhouse.
With lead singer and /guitarist Brendan Bayliss and his cohorts keeping the lion’s share of the sold-out amphitheater crowd on its feet the entire night, the Midwest band returned to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park on Sunday.
Over the course of two hefty sets, UM’s Grand Rapids stop on its nationwide anniversary tour rolled as the sort of ultra-groovy, adventurous, midsummer night’s dream that stands out from more serene Meijer Gardens affairs — making the show as much about the fans as the band.
