It was a spectacle of furious guitars and flailing fans on Friday for Ty Segall’s double-header of shows at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids.
One attendee at the California garage rocker’s jam-packed evening set called it the “best rock ‘n’ roll show I’ve seen in 25 to 30 years. He completely blew me away.”
Unfurling as a sweaty club show, complete with a mosh pit and rock fists, Segall’s guitar revved like a classic engine throughout.
With the crowd packed wall to wall for the sold-out late show, Segall ripped through a set that included the songs “Girlfriend,” “My Lady on Fire,” “Buildings” and “Manipulator.” Read more about Segall in this Local Spins interview here.

The twin-bill wasn’t the only packed house in Grand Rapids on Friday.
The Morning Yells — led by siblings Phil and Laura Stancil — energized a capacity crowd in the Americana/indie-rock band’s Grand Rapids debut at SpeakEZ Lounge as part of the final Live Music Fridays show of the spring hosted by Local Spins.
From playing new material for the first time to recapping singles and album tracks from the band’s catalog, the band now based in West Michigan showcased its striking sibling harmonies and infectious melodies over two sets.
Those shows were just part of the smorgasbord of concerts unleashed at venues across the region over the past week, including Thursday shows in Kalamazoo featuring Dogs in a Pile at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe and Carmen Bradford Quartet (with Keith Hall, Matt Freis and Carlos DeRosa) at Crawlspace Theatre, and Hail the Sun, Foxy Shazam, Makari and Resilia at The Intersection’s Elevation in Grand Rapids. Friday also saw Michigan’s Chirp performing at Old Dog Tavern in Kalamazoo, with Organ Fairchild opening the early show.
Saturday’s lineup included The Pyramid Scheme’s “super fun” 15th anniversary party in Grand Rapids with a bevy of local bands performing, while the Octave Cat “super trio” and Act Casual jammed away at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe. Scroll down to browse all of the photos.
