Granted, when three brothers play in the same band there are bound to be “unnecessary fights” and “petty grievances.”
But Max Knoth, frontman for West Michigan’s The Skinny Limbs, insisted there’s also “a built-in, tight-knit groove because we’ve been playing for 15-plus years together.”
“I think overall it really helps to just have similar influences growing up,” said Knoth, singer and guitarist for the alternative surf rock/pop band that first formed in 2017, though siblings Max, Jake (drums) and Nate (bass) have been “jamming to Rush, Tom Petty and The Police since we can remember.”
“We’ve branched out as of late, but to have that foundation together, I think that’s irreplaceable.”
With synth player and percussionist Mitch Garcia and lead guitarist Andrew Deters rounding out the band, The Skinny Limbs today officially release their fourth EP, “Mozart for Martians,” that includes singles the group has released over the past year.
“I want people to first and foremost find something they can jam to when listening to our music. Jake and I take a lot of pride in the rhythms and melodies in our music, and that’s what we start with when first approaching a new song,” Knoth said.
“As of late, I’ve turned to lyrical songwriting to let off steam and get my thoughts documented somewhere, and as a result, I’ve definitely seen more connection with our lyrics as they become more emotionally driven.
“I really hope fans of ‘60s surf rock – think The Beach Boys and Dick Dale – along with fans of Japanese City Pop can all find something that they love in our music. We really try our best to make it appealing to a wide audience of music lovers.”
That means “jamming out and feeling the groove” during The Skinny Limbs’ shows, with the band’s next appearance scheduled for April 25 at Mulligan’s Pub in Grand Rapids, joined by The Darling Suns and Melanie Pierce. Details here.
Knoth noted that “countless hours jamming together” have created “a pretty tight-knit feel” at live shows.
The band also plans “plenty of shows along the lakeshore this summer,” with hopes of releasing two or three more singles later this year.
“I feel really good about where our songwriting is going as well – more literal lyrics that describe my mental state at times as well as the state of our world and the sentiments of the people around me,” Knoth said.
For this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE, the band spotlighted two of their recent singles – “To the Limit” and “Too Little Too Late” – both of which appear on the new EP.
This week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE (which spotlights Michigan music at 11 a.m. Fridays and 5 p.m. Sundays on WYCE 88.1 FM and online at wyce.org) also featured tracks by The Junky Swinger, The Lasso, The Whiskey Charmers, The Atrics (the musicians’ pick by The Skinny Limbs), Colhart, Spike the Media, Adam Schumaker, Sunken Melody, Bruce Matthews, Kyle Brown & The Human Condition and Whorled.
