Midway through their set at The Acorn in Three Oaks, Mich., on Friday, The Jayhawks delivered a rendition of the appropriately titled, “What Led Me to This Town,” from 2000’s classic, much-admired album, “Smile.”
For the beloved alt-country/pop/rock band from Minneapolis, it was summer touring that brought them to the cozy 300-capacity Michigan venue that’s become a magnet for touring acts as well as regional favorites in recent years.
The career-spanning, 22-song set included several selections from “Smile” as well as 2003’s “Rainy Day Music” which produced such gems as “Tailspin,” “Stumbling Through the Dark,” “Angelyne” and “All The Right Reasons” — all tracks unfurled live at The Acorn, with Michigan native and singer-songwriter Beth Bombara getting the night started.
At the same time, about 100 miles to the north along Lake Michigan, what led many fans to Grand Haven was not only the picturesque, seasonal beauty of the community but the first Grand Haven Free Fridays show at downtown’s Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium, with Grand Rapids’ Nathan Walton & The Remedy headlining the inaugural volley of the summer series. Sam Bekins opened the night.
(Next week – July 12 – Free Fridays will feature the Legal Immigrants and Van Mason.)
