Black Violin is led by classically trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin). Joining them on stage are DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band uses a unique blend of classical & hip-hop music, often described as “classical boom,” to overcome stereotypes and encourage people of all ages, races and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers. Black Violin is currently writing and recording its next studio album, expected to be released late 2019.
Their most recent record, “Stereotypes,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and No. 4 on the Billboard R&B Chart. Touring behind latest album “Eraserland,” Strand of Oaks (led by Indiana native, Philly-based producer and songwriter Tim Showalter) brings a powerful (and sometimes psychedelic) folk-rock and folk sound to Grand Rapids. Pitchfork raved that the new album “unfolds in sober meditations and electrified anthems where synths fuse with glistening electric guitar and ringing cymbals” in “a monument to the newly refocused Strand of Oaks.”

Austin’s Greyhounds – Anthony Farrell, Andrew Trube and Ed Miles – are crisscrossing the country after playing a pair of shows in Texas with Los Lobos. The group released a full-length debut album, “Liberty,” back in 2004. And after Trube and Farrell spent time in JJ Grey & Mofro’s touring band, the group has refocused its energy on Greyhounds, releasing “Cheyenne Valley Drive” in 2018. AmericanBluesScene.com praised the recording’s “huge sound” and “well-constructed songs, amazing vocals and thoughtful performances.”

Well, now for something completely different. Award-winning country star Luke Bryan is bringing his “Farm Tour 2019” to “the harvest fields of six never-before-played farms,” including Stafford Farms in Richland, northeast of Kalamazoo.
The stage set up on the farm is touted as a full-production affair, aiming to bring a large-scale show to a small town. And to up the ante, fellow country stars Cole Swindell, Mitchell Tenpenny, The Peach Pickers and DJ Rock are also on the bill headed by Bryan, who’s released six full-length albums since 2007 and released the No. 1 single, “Knockin’ Boots,” earlier this year.

Wedged between shows in Madison, Wis., and Detroit, Nashville’s Judah & The Lion Grand Rapids appearance comes on the heels of releasing a third full-length album, “Pep Talks,” which soared to No. 18 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 2 on the Alternative chart. MotherJones.com hailed the band, melding alt-rock, bluegrass, Americana, folk-rock and pop, for the album, saying it’s “a great example of why alternative music is so good right now” and noting that the band turns “folk sounds into electronic bops.”

It’s that time of year again. For more than 40 years, the town of Rockford has hosted its fall Harvest Festival with numerous activities and events downtown, including plenty of live music.
The Rockford Brewing beer tent will feature Hazy Past at 8 p.m. Friday ($5), Full Cord Bluegrass as a trio at 1 p.m. Saturday (free), The Crane Wives at 8 p.m. Saturday ($5) and An Dro at 1 p.m. Sunday (free).
