TUESDAY
SHAWN MULLINS
MAX GOMEZ
When: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
Tickets: $45-$55
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
The Seven Steps Up listening room has been a popular tour stop for singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins who made a big splash way back in 1998 with the Grammy-nominated, chart-topping single “Lullaby,” but who’s continued to impress critics and audiences with his well-crafted songs.
He’s touring behind his most recent album, “My Stupid Heart.”
Get tickets online at pindropconcerts.com. Seven Steps Up follows this with a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday concert starring the return of singer-songwriter Seth Glier, $25-$35.
THE REPTILIAN, SLOW MASS
CHARLES THE OSPREY, OLIVER HOUSTON
When: 8 p.m.
Tickets: $7 advance, $10 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
Kalamazoo’s The Reptilian contends it’s been churning out “instrumentally intricate, emotionally destructive jams” since diving into the music scene in 2008. Its “ever-evolving sound has them currently sitting in the realm of math-rock/screamo that’s purposefully chaotic, crunchy and aggressive.” It also, apparently, has the band playing its final Grand Rapids show on Tuesday night, topping a full lineup of West Michigan rock outfits: Slow Mass, Charles the Osprey and Oliver Houston.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Get tickets and more online at pyramidschemebar.com.
WEDNESDAY
JAKE KERSHAW
When: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: DeltaPlex Arena parking lot, Walker
Hard to believe that this is already the fourth year that WLAV-FM (96.9) has hosted its Summertime Blues series in the parking lot outside DeltaPlex Arena in Walker, but the mid-week series continues to draw large groups of blues fans and motorcycle enthusiasts.
This year, it all kicks off with a local favorite who drew one of the biggest crowds ever for the series: 17-year-old blues-rock guitar sensation Jake Kershaw of Marshall. And what makes this series-opening show even more special: His band has added dynamic, 19-year-old keyboard player Adam Pryor, who, we’re told, will really light it up on the Hammond B3 organ. Read more about the rest of the summertime series and get the full schedule online at Local Spins.
SEAL
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $96 ($94 members)
Where: Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids Township
British-born soul/pop singer Seal last year released an album of covers, “Standards,” which didn’t chart in the United States, but soared into the top 20 in the United Kingdom. Seal, 55, of course, is best known for his mammoth hit singles, 1990’s “Crazy” and 1994’s “Kiss from a Rose,” both of which made him an international sensation.
Australian singer-songwriter Rennie Adams opens the concert. A few tickets still remained for this show early in the week; get tickets and details online at meijergardens.org.
LOCAL SPINS WEDNESDAY:
EL BRANDINO, THE TURNIPS
When: 8 p.m. Wednesday
Admission: Free
Where: SpeakEZ Lounge, Grand Rapids
Local Spins is thrilled to present this double bill of incredible, diverse and uber-talented West Michigan acts. El Brandino (aka multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Brandon Proch) recently released his full-length debut album, a rich and wide-ranging collection of songs that he’ll unfurl with help from his band.
The Turnips, meanwhile, qualify as a super-group of musicians, with a couple of the guys also members of the popular Ultraviolet Hippopotamus jam band. But The Turnips have an impressive following themselves, and their most recent studio album was listed as among the regional favorites of 2017.
Local Spins Wednesdays are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, Perrin Brewing Company and WYCE, with Michigan beer specials on tap and free parking in the Sixth Street Park, a block north on Monroe Avenue NW.
REBIRTH BRASS BAND
DEROBERT & THE HALF-TRUTHS
When: 9 p.m. Wednesday
Tickets: $17 advance, $20 day of show
Where: The Pyramid Scheme, Grand Rapids
This tour is billed as “35 Years of Rebirth Brass Band: A New Orleans institution since 1983,” so expect a career-spanning set of dance-inspiring, funky favorites from this legendary crew that also plays Otus Supply in Ferndale the night after the Grand Rapids show.
The Grammy Award-winning band has released 17 albums over the years, not to mention collaborating with other artists. Doors open at 8 p.m. (The Pyramid Scheme follows this on Thursday with Anna Burch and Fiona Dickinson.)
And if you’re into that robust brass band vibe, then you can experience it two nights in a row: Chicago’s Lowdown Brass Band plays Founders Brewing in Grand Rapids at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, free.
THURSDAY
IN THE LOCAL SPINS CONCERT SPOTLIGHT
LANGHORNE SLIM
& THE LOST AT LAST BAND
THE ACCIDENTALS, ROOSEVELT DIGGS
When: 6:30 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $40
Where: St. Cecilia Music Center, 24 Ransom Ave. NE, Grand Rapids

Ever since hosting their first shows, organizers of Grand Haven’s popular Red House Concert Series have believed in using music to enrich the lives of people in their community. Now, they’re upping the ante by hosting annual fundraisers for local charitable organizations and causes they believe in while offering a memorable evening of music.
Thursday is no exception, when the group brings in acclaimed Pennsylvania native and Americana singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim and the Lost at Last Band, as well as a pair of Michigan favorites: Traverse City’s The Accidentals and West Michigan’s Roosevelt Diggs. Proceeds from ticket sales, auctions and raffles will benefit Rotary International and the Rotary Club of Rockford. Langhorne is touring behind his latest album, 2017’s “Lost at Last Vol. 1.”
“We are building a good fan base that understands what we are doing,” said Jack Clark, co-organizer and promoter for Red House Concert Series. “It’s about the music, it’s about the community. And it’s growing. People are enjoying that. This is outside our day-to-day lives and jobs, but we do it because we love it. With that growth, we’re doing a lot of good things with it.”
Proceeds from Thursday’s show will aid Rotary Club of Rockford’s ongoing efforts to help bring clean water to the greater Rockford area after recent water contamination discoveries. These efforts include helping to provide filtration systems for many lower-income families.
“It’s a good cause; it helps local families in need,” Clark said. “A great cause and a great venue – we are really excited for this event, all the way around. … This is our chance to give back to them, not to mention, get a great show out of it as well.” – Matt Marn
THE POSIES
TERRA LIGHTFOOT
When: 8 p.m. Thursday
Tickets: $20 advance, $25 day of show
Where: Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Café, Kalamazoo
When Washington’s The Posies first uncorked their truly engaging power pop and alt-rock back in the late 1980s, the band’s songs stood out from the pack, earning them a fair amount of acclaim and a little bit of “modern rock” success. After going their separate ways in on-and-off fashion and performing sporadically, The Posies released “Blood/Candy” in 2010 and “Solid States” in 2016.
This week, the band brings its 30th anniversary tour to Kalamazoo (a day before playing The Magic Bag on the east side of the state). Get tickets online at bellsbeer.com, where you can also get details about Friday’s David S. Kruse & The Westerlies show and Saturday’s seated Marie Miller concert.

Electric Forest attracts more than 35,000 music lovers, hippies and festival devotees from across the globe. Ranked by many among the top music festivals in the world, this year’s lineup as always will feature multiple sets by festival hosts The String Cheese Incident, along with the return of Bassnectar and GRIZ, plus such faves as Galantis, Rufus du Sol, Zhu, Action Bronson, Bonobo, Chromeo, Cut Copy, Green Velvet, Jauz, Keys N Krates, Louis the Child, Malaa, Marian Hill, San Holo, The Glitch Mob, Thundercat, Washed Out, Xavier Rudd and many, many more.

His most recent album, 2017’s “Undivided Heart and Soul,” has spawned such favorites as “Lucky Penny” and “Crying’s Just a Thing You Do,” with earlier tracks “North Side Gal” and “Let the Good Times Roll” earning plenty of attention, too.
