New York rapper and songwriter Nas brings his tour to Grand Rapids to kick off the week. Nas has released eight consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums and has sold more than 30 million records worldwide.

The Grammy-nominated Nas, with a reputation for fiery performances as well as aiding charities in Africa, released his highly acclaimed debut album, “Illmatic,” in 1994, and a subsequent album, “It Was Written,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and went double-platinum in two months.

MACKENZIE ZIEGLER

The fresh boy band Prettymuch kicked off its U.S. tour in Dallas earlier this month. The pop group consists of five guys who originally aimed to pursue solo careers but were spotted by Simon Cowell, who helped mold them into a group that’s compared to One Direction. Inspired by old-school R&B acts such as Boyz II Men, the band has a dedicated fan base and was cited by Pandora and others as an “artist to watch” in 2018.

The group recently finished a tour with Grammy-nominated singer Khalid and will be joined on this tour stop by singer, actress and songwriter Mackenzie Ziegler. Doors open at 6 p.m. for this all ages show. Get tickets and more information online here.

DAWES, MARGO PRICE

California’s Dawes has come a long way since its indie-folk/folk-rock beginnings back in 2009. The band – brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, Wylie Gelber and Lee Pardini – has released six studio albums, including 2018’s “Passwords,” which soared into the Top 10 of Billboard’s Rock and Folk charts. The touring band also features standout guitarist Trevor Menear, who happens to be the son of former WLAV radio personality Kevin Matthews of Grand Rapids.

Also on the bill for this tour is fast-rising country singer Margo Price, who has earned well-deserved kudos for her throwback country approach and was nominated for best new artist at the Grammy Awards earlier this year. GAELIC STORM

Celtic rock with high-energy flair. California’s Gaelic Storm has been creating a hurricane of Celtic rock spawned by traditional Irish and Scottish music for more than 20 years.

The five-piece band – which released its most recent studio album, “Go Climb a Tree,” in 2017 – brings its current U.S. tour to Southwest Michigan this week with a stop at Bell’s. Get tickets and details online at bellsbeer.com.

THE MENZINGERS

Philadelphia-based punk rockers The Menzingers bring their summer tour to The Pyramid Scheme. The four-man wrecking crew, which formed in 2006 as teenagers, are touring behind their most recent album, “Hello Exile,” which bristles with fiery guitar solos and pounding rhythms.

The self-proclaimed “cicadas of rock,” The Honeytones, are set to emerge from slumber to rattle the rafters of SpeakEZ Lounge in the Local Spins Wednesdays debut with a dizzying blend of rock, pop, blues, alt-country and whatever – from deep-track classics to obscure originals. It’s a rare opportunity to catch one of Grand Rapids’ longest-lived rock bands in the flesh – if that’s not too scary for you.

Local Spins Wednesdays feature Michigan beer specials and are presented by Local Spins, SpeakEZ Lounge, North Coast Guitar Co. and WYCE. Free parking is available in the city lot on Monroe Avenue kitty-corner from SpeakEZ just to the south – and in the Sixth Street Park lot to the north.

Nashville roots rockers the Legendary Shack Shakers will make a stop in Grand Rapids during their summer tour. For more than 25 years, they’ve been leaders in the “Southern gothic” genre, mixing everything from blues to rockabilly to country to bluegrass to rock ‘n’ roll.

Joining the band will be J.D. Pinkus, a bassist best known for being in the punk band the Butthole Surfers. This show is ages 21-and-older, and tickets can be found online here.

The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival, of course, pays tribute to the service personnel who protect and monitor our waterways, but it’s a celebration that also provides loads of entertainment, from a carnival to a mammoth parade to ship tours to performances by the U.S. Coast Guard Band.

But there are also several straight nights of concerts at the new Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium right downtown, with tributes to popular stars of the past. Get the full schedule here and remember that Saturday’s show is followed by a spectacular fireworks display.

Of course, the Grand Haven Eagles will once again also host several nights of live music in the organization’s beer tent at 20 N. 2nd St. with HyRyder and Roosevelt Diggs on Wednesday night, Back Seat Driver and Electric Red on Thursday night, Vertigo, Decades and Quarter Below on Friday and Scottville Clown Band, Guinness Brothers, Big Cadillac and Pop Fiction on Saturday. Bluesy hard rock trio Quaker City Night Hawks reflect the sounds of Fort Worth, Texas, and the lineup is rounded out by Columbus, Ohio’s Lo-Pan. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

“GR Does The Dead: Cats Down Under The Stars” will feature the music of Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead, starring the Chicago-based band Terrapin Flyer.

Dirty Mike & the Boys, featuring members of the band Desmond Jones, will also perform. The evening will also feature vendors set up in “shakedown street” fashion, a photo booth, live painting and a food track. This event is all ages and tickets are available here. A portion of proceeds from the Purchase Productions event will help support Happy Cat Café.

Ribfest, one of the original downtown Kalamazoo festivals, has been taking place for 34 years and has an average attendance of 10,000 people per weekend. Indie-electronica duo Pink Sky hits the stage at The Pyramid Scheme, with the husband-and-wife duo commandeering multiple instruments, including hardware synths, drum machines, samplers and electric pianos to create a unique and unusual sound. The self-released debut album, “Forms,” was released in August and became the fifth-most played album on WYCE (88.1 FM) in 2018. It has earned college radio airplay across the country.

Local singer-songwriter Dean Madonia, whose published compositions can be heard across many genres and platforms, has performed all over the country. He was also recently diagnosed with cancer. Wax Wings Brewing Co. in Kalamazoo is holding a benefit and fundraiser in honor of Dean and his musical contributions in the hopes of helping him through this difficult time.

Since then, the band has built a seriously robust fan base, touring incessantly and band members have really honed their sound and live sets since then.

John Nowak, Dirty Mike & The Boys and Poor Boys playing at Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill in Grand Rapids 9 p.m. Monday, free – Join John Nowak, drummer for Desmond Jones, as he continues his Monday night residency at the Tip Top with the debut of Poor Boys and the revelry of Dirty Mike & The Boys.

Tilian, Landon Tewers and Brent Walsh playing at The Stache inside The Intersection in Grand Rapids, 7 p.m. on Tuesday, $17 advance, $20 day of show — Tilian is hitting Grand Rapids as part of “The Skeptic Tour,” with support from Landon Tewers and Brent Walsh. Tilian began his rock musical career as a singer-songwriter before founding the rock band Tides of Man in 2007 and later becoming vocalist for the post-hardcore band Dance Gavin Dance. He’s since released four full-length studio albums.

Franklin Park and The 6-Pak playing the Tuesday Evening Music Club Series at Meijer Gardens, 7 p.m. Tuesday, free for Meijer Gardens members, regular admission for others ($14.50 adults) – It’s retro week for the Tuesday Evening Music Club series with a pair of West Michigan bands that were popular in the ‘60s firing up the amphitheater with their nostalgic music.

Beats on Bates Concert Series in downtown Kalamazoo featuring Yolonda Lavendar and Megan Dooley, 5 p.m. Wednesday, free – This brand new concert series takes place in the freshly renovated Bates Alley behind Olde Peninsula in downtown Kalamazoo. The free event starts around 5 p.m. every Wednesday and showcases local and regional artists amongst family-friendly games, food, drinks and all around community awesomeness. This week, the series features Megan Dooley and Yolonda Lavender.

Cruise-In Series at The Gilmore Car Museum, 5 p.m. Wednesday, free – Every Wednesday night during the summer, The Gilmore Car Museum hosts a “cruise-in,” when local classic car owners drive their babies into the sunshine at the popular historical site. This year, the museum has upped the ante with a concert series to complement the classic car show. The Bronk Brothers, a hardworking duo of brothers, will keep it real with honky-tonk-inspired tunes.

The Beach Boys playing Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids Township, 7 p.m. Thursday, $69, $67 Meijer Gardens members – They’re back. Orc, The Deputies, and Dollars To Donuts playing at Mulligan’s Pub in Grand Rapids, 9 p.m. Thursday, free — Two-piece progressive rock band from Lansing/Ann Arbor, Orc will team up with The Deputies from Muskegon and Dollars to Donuts from Grand Rapids for this free 21-and-older show.

The Appleseed Collective playing Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids, 9:30 p.m. Thursday, free – Ann Arbor’s favorite swing-propelled indie-folk/Americana act returns to the Founders stage for what’s always a lively, entertaining evening. Founders follows this on Saturday night with the Joe Marcinek band and the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra on Sunday.

Nicholas James Thomasma playing at New Holland Brewing’s The Knickerbocker in Grand Rapids, 7 p.m. Friday, free — Grand Rapids musician and singer-songwriter Nicholas James Thomasma will take part in New Holland’s Singer-Songwriter Summer Series on Friday.

Lisa Mackie and Ryan Gladding playing Final Gravity Brewing Co. in Kalamazoo, 8 p.m. Friday, free – Join this dynamic new duo at Final Gravity Brewing Co.’s Kalamazoo locale. Seamlessly blending the old and the new, Mackie and Gladding play many different genres and styles, ranging from old country to newish pop. With a voice that’s been described at Mazzy Star-meets-Joni Mitchell, Mackie’s original compositions will blow you away, along with Gladding’s superbly dynamic accompaniment on guitar.
