It was a nostalgia-filled room on Wednesday night, with elder emos in their flannels, skinny jeans and Converse occupying GLC Live at 20 Monroe in Grand Rapids.
New York’s Taking Back Sunday took the stage as “The Circle of Life” (yeah, the one from “The Lion King”) played, exciting the Millennials that made up the majority of the crowd for the emo/post-hardcore/pop-punk band formed back in 1999.
Frontman Adam Lazzara loves spending time in Grand Rapids, noting that two members of the band’s tour crew are Grand Rapids citizens.
“Many a days off we’ve spent wandering the streets of Grand Rapids,” he remarked, also declaring that Taking Back Sunday would forgo an encore during Wednesday’s show in order to just play more music — eliciting a roar of approval from fans.
It didn’t take long for crowd surfing to begin, followed by pockets of mosh pits around the room, ebbing and flowing with the music.
The band held nothing back in terms of playing the hits, including a few rare songs from 2006’s “Louder Now” (with the band planning release of a special 20th anniversary edition of the album on Oct. 16).
Everyone got to hear their favorite song, it seemed. And as the night went on, the crowd became more in tune, screaming every lyric and jumping in unison.
By the time the end of the night rolled around, Taking Back Sunday didn’t disappoint its devoted fan base by closing the show with “MakeDamnSure” — the band’s biggest hit from “Louder Now.”
