Take it from Suzies: The psych-hued Grand Rapids band’s music is more fetching than it was when the group started a few years ago.
“We’ve evolved a lot,” says guitarist and singer Luke Bonczyk. “At first, we were just doing a lot of noisy stuff, just chaotic. Now, it’s more melodic.”
Adds drummer and singer Casey Huizenga: “It’s prettier now.”
To prove the point, the band – Bonczyk, Huizenga, guitarist Shane Tripp, bassist Andrew Tamlyn and keyboard player Adam Neimara – brought its pretty, psychedelic rock vibe to Studio X for this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE, performing the songs “Dune-Wap” and “Sheesh” on the air. Influenced by the likes of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Spacemen 3 and Cosmonauts, Suzies earlier this year released the Dizzybird Records album, “Forget Me Not,” recorded at Grand Rapids’ all-analog Goon Lagoon studios, then quickly followed up by recording yet another album at the same studio last month.
The band hopes to release that project later this year, with eventual plans for touring beyond the Grand Rapids area. Until then, they’ll be performing shows like the one on Saturday night at The Pyramid Scheme, headlined by Grand Rapids punk band I Believe in Julio.
The wide-ranging band lineup – with music starting at 9:30 p.m. Saturday – also features reggie and Blanca Luz. Day-of-show tickets for the 21-and-older show are $10; doors open at 9 p.m. Get details and tickets online at pyramidschemebar.com.
The May 24 edition of Local Spins on WYCE also boasted the premiere of new tracks by Upstage Crew, The Baker Brothers, I Believe in Julio, Tony Bakker & The Mercy Wheel, In the Blue Jazz Ensemble, Political Lizard, Winnow (formerly known as Watching for Foxes) and Queen Bee Dream (this week’s “musicians’ pick”), as well as songs from Nicholas James & The Bandwagon (playing this weekend’s Buses by the Beach Bus Benefit) and The Accidentals (playing the free Local Spins Summer Kickoff outside HopCat on Sunday).
