Take it from The Accidentals, the Traverse City alt-folk heroes who’ve performed across the globe, sometimes in front of massive audiences.
There’s nothing quite like playing outdoors in Michigan in front of their home-state fans — fans from Ann Arbor to Lowell to Boyne City to Grand Rapids.
“This year when we sat down to look at summer schedules we realized we had six dates we were all free. So we were super intentional with the shows,” said multi-instrumentalist Sav Madigan. “We wanted to play shows that encourage all ages and families and most of them are free community events.”
Consequently, the band will play two Michigan shows on June 12 — an early show for Ann Arbor’s Sonic Lunch and a late show for LowellArts’ Sizzlin’ Summer Concerts in Lowell — followed by July appearances at Lavender Hills Farm in Boyne City and an Aug. 19 show for the Tuesday Evening Music Club series at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids with Patty PerShayla, The Burney Sisters and Emma Zinck.

“We have really special relationships with these particular venue buyers. They’re people that have supported the band for years and helped us cultivate music communities. … They’re like family.”
That “family” includes concert organizers who place a priority on showcasing Michigan acts, including Ann Arbor’s free “Sonic Lunch” series that takes place at 11:30 a.m. Thursdays on Liberty Plaza.
“We definitely push to book Michigan and national acts,” said Martin Bandyke, who’s on the team that assembles the Sonic Lunch lineup. “And we certainly try to make the lineup musically diverse.”
Diverse lineups featuring Michigan-bred acts are a staple of Michigan’s free community concerts with more than 100 series taking place on almost every day of the week across Michigan. Local Spins just added 25 more free series to the 2025 Free Outdoor Community Concerts Guide, with several of the schedules listed below.
Some communities — including Hastings, Ludington and Grand Haven among others — boast multiple nights of concerts that draw families and all ages of fans toting lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets for these outdoor performances.
The Accidentals have made a habit of playing several of these series every summer, and they’re excited about returning to their home state with new music in hand. They noted they’ve got a surprise new album dropping in June while juggling a variety of tours: Madigan tours full-time now with country star Lainey Wilson, Katie Larson tours with country-pop singer Brett Young and drummer Katelynn Corll just signed on with blues guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor (while also filling in with Beth Nielsen Chapman).
“We’ve all grown so much this year, and we’re looking forward to bringing that growth to these shows and creating a really interactive experience,” Madigan said. “We’ve also got some great friends joining us at random shows.”
