West Michigan's music scene
Wintry weather be damned.
Michigan’s near-constant snowfall interrupted some celebrations over the weekend, but it couldn’t wipe out tour stops by out-of-state artists or a couple of much-anticipated, collaborative showcases of regional music.
In Grand Rapids, the B93 Guitar Pull returned to The Intersection on Thursday with country artists Alexandra Kay, Chase McDaniel, John Morgan, Vincent Mason, Preston Cooper and more sharing songs and stories.
On Saturday, Colorado’s alt-country, punk-infused-folk band the Gasoline Lollipops brought their January tour to Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, with Grand Rapids’ own Nathan Walton getting the night started.
In Portage, Friday’s lineup included an intriguing, style-blended collaboration between husband and wife via Grand Rapids’ indie-pop artist Mar in Color and DJ/producer TechTonic at AZO Lounge, aka Technicolor (which is working on a new album). Mar in Color’s first full-band performance, featuring double percussion, bass, keys, sax and electronic wind instrument, was followed by Cincinnati DJ Abby Vice.
The next night, Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo drew a nearly full house for the return of Kalamazoo’s world-beat favorites The Red Sea Pedestrians — a band that’s long collaborated with The Cornfed Girls, who opened Saturday’s show. The nearly three-hour affair boasted three sets of music between the two bands, with Red Sea Pedestrians treating the crowd to some new music that will appear on an upcoming studio album. Singer-songwriter Darcy Wilkin, of The Cornfed Girls, revealed that she, too, has a new album on the way. These longstanding stars of Kalamazoo’s music scene had the crowd singing and dancing the night away.
