From nightclubs to a fine arts center to a listening room to Eastown basements, West Michigan bid adieu to October and hello to November in rocking fashion, captured in photos at Local Spins.
A mega-rivalry in college football may have dominated Michigan sports headlines this weekend, but local and regional bands dominated the musical landscape from Grand Rapids to the lakeshore.

West Michigan's music scene
It started with some leftover Halloween hauntings, including The Fuzzrites and Delilah DeWylde & The Lost Boys (who dressed and played like Cheap Trick on Thursday) scaring up lively strains at Founders Brewing Co. The same night, legendary singer-songwriters Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt played an acoustic duo show at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center. That was followed by dozens of bands and solo artists playing house concerts in five Eastown homes as part of the second Lamp Light Music Festival, Toronto singer-songwriter Ken Yates playing Spring Lake’s Seven Steps Up listening room with Brian Dunne, and Ann Arbor folk/rock/roots band The Ragbirds playing The Pyramid Scheme on their fall tour along with Grand Rapids’ Tony LaJoye Trio.

Peter Karp & Sue Foley were presented portraits of themselves by The Pinnacle Center’s Bill Worst on Saturday.
Americana/blues artists Peter Karp and Sue Foley played the Music to Benefit Music concert at Hudsonville’s Pinnacle Center on Saturday to raise money to buy musical equipment for area schools. The Pinnacle Center show and dinner drew hundreds of folks and raised thousands for the cause. And the band — Karp and Foley on guitars, Niles Terrat on bass and Michael Catapano on drums — clearly enjoyed the plush surroundings, chatting amiably with the crowd during and after the show. “Sometimes it feels like you’re working,” Karp said of performing with the hard-touring band. “And sometimes it feels like you’re playing in a living room. This is a big living room.” You can check out some video highlights of that show below. (The duo also played the Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill on Friday.)

Karp and Foley were outstanding at the Tip Top. By far the best musical performance I’ve seen there.
They were outstanding at The Pinnacle Center as well. Terrific people, too.
Amazing performance at Tip Top – Second time there and they were absolutely stellar
