This week’s “Not-So-Big-List” concert guide as the coronavirus crisis winds down is significant because it represents the return of some shows at venues and locations that normally would have been hopping at this point in June but have been silent until now.
That includes Grand Rapids’ Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, which stages its first band show (King Biscuit Trio) on Friday night, following comedy night on Tuesday and a DJ night of alternative music on Wednesday. The West Side venue wraps things up on Saturday with the return of Delilah DeWylde to celebrate Tip Top’s ninth anniversary.
Meanwhile, the West Michigan Jazz Society — which was forced to cancel its Monday night Jazz in the Park series for 2020 — is partnering with Amore Trattoria Italiana on Alpine Avenue NW to host performances by jazz artists in the restaurant’s parking lot as patrons arrive for curbside takeout service between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday. (Donations will be accepted for the jazz society, which will also live-stream the performance.)

And Beaver Xing in Comstock Park is restarting its outdoor version of a house concert, starting with a Wednesday night open-mic session.
Protocol has changed with recommendations for wearing masks, continuing to social-distance and limiting capacity to 50 percent.
Ted Smith, co-owner of Tip Top Deluxe, said the bar now limits attendance for its shows to 60 patrons (which is less than 50 percent capacity) and has removed several bar stools and a few tables, while blocking off the middle booth to help ensure social-distancing. The bar also is asking patrons to wear face masks that they can remove when seated. At this time, dancing or standing on the dance floor isn’t allowed.
This limited Local Spins listing represents a sampling of area shows for music lovers to test out. Of course, this was also supposed to be a big weekend for outdoor festivals, including Buttermilk Jamboree in Delton and Founders Fest in downtown Grand Rapids, but folks will have to wait until 2021 to experience those beloved events again.
