Jason Singer calls it getting support from “the home team.”
With baseball season officially under way, the Michigander frontman’s description of the reception that the band’s pop-driven, self-titled album has received in West Michigan seems more than apropos.
“Michigander” — released in February by Totally Normal Records — soared to No. 1 on the Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart for March, representing the release by a Michigan artist that received the most radio airplay at Grand Rapids’ WYCE (88.1 FM). It jumped from No. 3 in February.
“Always feels special to feel loved by the home team — especially from a station that I used to listen to,” said Singer, a Midland native now based in Nashville.
Paced by the anthemic pop track “Giving Up” that’s racked up more than 1 million listens on Spotify, “Michigander” has earned plenty of kudos from critics and fans, with New Noise Magazine saying the album “reaches deep into the soul” in captivating and compelling fashion.
“I’m so proud of it and I’m grateful for all the messages and kind words I’ve gotten about it,” said Singer. “I’m already starting to work on the next project.”
Before that, however, the band has a major tour kicking off as the opening act for folk-rock’s Dawes starting next week.
“So, so excited,” Singer said. “They’re one of my favorite bands. I’m truly honored that they asked me. Can’t believe it. Gonna be a fun run of shows.”
The Hot Top 5 Chart for March also includes “Purple” at No. 2 from Kalamazoo’s Headband Henny, “Interference” at No. 3 from Grand Rapids funk fave Melophobix and “Cold Press” at No. 4 from another GR funk-driven band, The Hacky Turtles.
Michigan songbird May Erlewine’s latest, “What It Takes,” tied at No. 5 with the bluesy “Flash-A-Magic” from Luke Winslow-King (February’s No. 1 album). Listen to tracks from all of the releases below.
