Local Spins first interviewed singer-songwriter Nathan Walton in 2018 as a fledgling Byron Center artist who had just released his first EP after performing for years in the Stone Thrown cover band.
Since then, the talented, ever-soulful vocalist has competed in Hollywood for ABC’s “American Idol,” won multiple WYCE Jammie Awards, performed at South by Southwest in Austin and assembled an all-star ensemble of West Michigan musicians who infuse his songs with groove-laden rock energy.
Nathan Walton & The Remedy — with several highly praised recordings in their repertoire — will headline Local Spins Fest at Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, following sets by Elijah Russ Collective, Short Panic, Hangman and Ocean & The Hand Me Downs, all performing under the theme, “The Future of Michigan Music.”
As a little preview to this summer-starting festival in downtown Grand Rapids and to learn more about the band’s advice to younger musicians, we invited bandleader Nathan Walton to participate in a brief Local Spins Fest Q&A. Get general admission and VIP tickets for Local Spins Fest here.
Local Spins: What’s the No. 1 goal for your band in 2024?
Walton: Getting some new original music in our set.
Local Spins: Now that you folks have been performing for awhile, what’s the most important lesson for a young band to learn?
Walton: Keep it real, a lot of stuff changes in life. People grow and change and so should your music and show.
Local Spins: Who do you idolize as a success story in music?
Walton: Tina Turner. Anybody that can survive extreme adversity and keep going is a true human with a career to idolize.
Local Spins: If you could send one of your band’s songs on a rocket ship as a message to another planet, which song would that be and why?
Walton: “The Light” to Pluto. Because it’s so far away from the sun, and because this song has grown and seems to be received well with every type of crowd. So maybe the aliens will enjoy it. (Scroll down to listen to “The Light.”)
Local Spins: What can folks expect from your set at Local Spins Fest?
Walton: High-energy, soulful rock ‘n’ roll! Expect to sing along, dance and leave feeling a bit euphoric.
