Also snagging awards for their 2014 ArtPrize entries were Matthew Fisher, American Wi-Fi, and Channing and Quinn, St. Cecilia Executive Director Cathy Holbrook announced Friday. The winners amassed the most votes of the 86 musical entries in ArtPrize public voting.
Bouwsma Schultz won the Blues/Rock Award for the second consecutive year, this time for “Kindness (441 Cass).” MacNaughton’s “5 Mile Mountain” received the Jazz Award, which he also won in 2012.
“I got to honor my grandfather and promote ArtPrize, too,” Bousma Schultz said of her song after the award announcement Friday night. “It’s all good.”
MacNaughton credited the musicians who played with him on his winning song. “Of course, I’m thrilled. Happy that ‘5 Mile Mountain’ resonated with folks,” he told Local Spins. “I believe that a large part of that is due to the talents of Eddie Eicher and Charlie Hoats. They made it sparkle.”
Each winning artist will receive a $2,000 cash prize from SCMC, plus free recording time from Michael Crittenden’s Mackinaw Harvest Studios in Grand Rapids. The awards will be handed out during an Oct. 21 private reception at Mackinaw Harvest Studios.
2014 marks the fourth year that ArtPrize has accepted music entries from songwriters, as part of the time-based art category. It’s the third time that St. Cecilia has presented awards. (Listen to the winners — and read the stories behind their tunes — by clicking on the song titles below.)
