It’s been a long time since Grand Rapids electronic pop/rock group AOK has released new material, but judging by the incendiary and catchy first track, “Back Burner,” it was worth the wait.
This week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE — which helped launch the community radio station’s Fall Fund Drive on Oct. 12 — premiered that track from AOK’s upcoming new Hot Capicola Records album, “WAVES,” officially being released on Saturday (Oct. 20) at The Pyramid Scheme, a show that also serves as the group’s farewell appearance.
The episode also featured new tracks by:
• Sligh Talkbox, aka Matthew Sligh West, which has a brand new hip hop album, “HEAT,” from which Local Spins on WYCE debuted the track “Seen It Before,” featuring Sarge Tha Dame;
• Ann Arbor’s ever-funky Vulfpeck, which released its new single, “It Gets Funkier IV,” via YouTube last week, a track featuring Louis Cole. Within five days, that video had racked up more than 200,000 views on YouTube (check out the video below);
• West Michigan singer-songwriter John Hartel’s self-released, retro-sounding single, “Cynthia’s Gone”;
• Benje Daneman’s Searchparty, which included the fetching “Children of the Light” on the Kalamazoo-based group’s dynamic new jazz album, “Light in the Darkness”;
• Grand Rapids’ experimentally oriented Free Hat and the unique single, “Channel Lock,” officially released earlier this year;
• Bob’s Dock, a new rock duo that recently released the EP, “Have Hope Again,” which features the track “Us vs Them,” which debuted on Local Spins on WYCE.
The show that spotlights local and regional music at 11 a.m. Friday on WYCE 88.1 FM, also featured tracks by Pretoria, Tom Hymn, Red Legs and Andrew Farmer, as well as a chat with singer-songwriter Ralston Bowles, who hosts one of several specialty programs on WYCE.
