Carving out a career in music has more than its share of obstacles, especially after a long and troubling pandemic that crippled touring and performing.
So in hopes of identifying and targeting the most pressing concerns and needs facing the state’s working musicians, the nonprofit Michigan Music Alliance wants to survey as many of these professionals as possible to help prioritize programming and support efforts.
Results from the statewide MMA needs assessment survey will be used by the all-volunteer organization to secure grant funding and develop “much-needed programs that will both enhance our overall music scene and culture, and to help it flourish and thrive,” said Elle Lively, MMA’s executive director.
Based in West Michigan and dedicated to educating and assisting the state’s music community, the MMA hopes a variety of musician groups, venues and industry associations will share the survey this month to attract a robust response from musicians across the state.
Professional musicians based in Michigan can participate by taking the survey online here, with MMA setting a deadline of May 1 for responses.
The survey covers issues such as musicians’ main challenges and obstacles, mental health, subjects they’d like to learn about and more.
Results will eventually be shared publicly and the MMA has encouraged “anyone who is affiliated with music to add their voice” to the project.
