While Lynyrd Skynyrd slaked fans’ thirst for nostalgia by closing out the band’s set at Grand Rapids’ Acrisure Amphitheater on Saturday with the endlessly requested “Free Bird,” Foreigner’s encore put a local twist on the classic rock favorite “I Want to Know What Love Is” by bringing the Hudsonville High School Choir on stage to accompany the musicians.
And as a special treat, band co-founder Lou Gramm — who only joins the tour for select dates and select songs — closed it all out by accompanying Foreigner for “Hot Blooded” to end the show.
It was part of an action-packed week of nostalgic concerts at the 12,000-capacity amphitheater, with Chicago and Styx delivering hits from the ’70s and ’80s on Thursday, and Australia’s 5 Seconds of Summer taking fans on a 15-year trip through its catalog on Wednesday.
The week also featured a tour stop at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park by country’s Brothers Osborne, Kalamazoo’s Corn Fed Girls and Analog Radio Hour playing Bell’s Eccentric Cafe, The Reverend Horton Heat and The Reverend Jesse Ray rockabillying Warner Vineyards in Paw Paw, Kentucky’s Tantric rattling Holland’s Park Theatre, and Old Dog Tavern in Kalamazoo hosting Payton & Annabelle’s Simon & Garfunkel tribute and its Moonlight Fest, which also drew an appearance from British social media giants Josh & Jase who’ve been traveling across Michigan.
Dirty Heads and 311 launched the week in rocking fashion with a Tuesday tour stop at Acrisure Amphitheater.
