Straddling roles as a working musician and a music journalist can pose its share of challenges, rewards and unique opportunities.
For many of us at Local Spins, maneuvering through this magical landscape over the past 10 years has unearthed insights into the world of career musicians enhanced by our own experiences as songwriters and performers.

Enrique Olmos certainly has embraced that unique perspective, not only writing in-depth profiles on a host of regional artists for Local Spins since 2015, but also touring and performing with a variety of bands (Watching For Foxes, Joshua Powell, among others) while creating his own music as frontman for Neon Birdhouse.
So it was pure joy getting a chance to chat with him about his experiences as part of this week’s edition of Local Spins on WYCE, when he shared some of his artist interview highlights as well as spotlight the music of some of his favorite artists performing next week for Local Spins’ 10th anniversary celebration.
The show explored everything from his first-ever interview (Rustbell) for a Local Spins feature in 2015 to his recent road trip to Nashville with photographer Loren Johnson, while debuting a recent Neon Birdhouse track recorded at Grand Rapids’ Dogtown Studio.
Along the way, the show featured tracks by Local Spins Fest artists Patty PerShayla, Earth Radio and Public Access, as well as previewing new music by two bands playing album release shows this weekend at The Pyramid Scheme — Cheap Emotion (Friday) and Lokella (Saturday).
And as a special preview for another album-release show taking place at Listening Room at 7:30 p.m. today (May 13), here’s video of a live acoustic rendition of “Catch,” the title track from the new Chain of Lakes album that singer-songwriter Kyle Rasche officially unveils during a performance tonight. This week’s episode of Local Spins on WYCE — which showcases Michigan music at 11 a.m. Fridays on WYCE (88.1 FM) and online at wyce.org — also debuted tracks by Eric O’Daly of The Appleseed Collective and Max Lockwood (who performed on Thursday at Listening Room in Grand Rapids), and featured live recordings of performances by the aforementioned Rustbell and Kalamazoo singer-songwriter Kaitlin Rose.
Oh, and it was all followed by an off-air paper airplane contest that was won convincingly by the Local Spins publisher who schooled his young cohort in the art of paper aeronautics.
