On Saturday evening (Feb. 22), the much-respected IPR serving northern Michigan will add an hour-long Michigan music showcase hosted by Local Spins founder John Sinkevics to its on-air lineup.
“We are looking for partners to feature more music and musicians in our programming. Local Spins is well-known as the primary source of information about popular music in Michigan and was an obvious place to start,” said Peter Payette, IPR’s executive director. “Your show is great and with a real Michigan feel.”
Airing at 7 p.m. Saturdays on WICA 91.5 FM (Traverse City), WHBP 90.1 FM (Harbor Springs/Petoskey) and WLMN 89.7 FM (Manistee/Ludington), Local Spins will debut ahead of the nationally syndicated “American Routes,” a two-hour program produced in New Orleans that explores a wide swath of American music, including blues, jazz, roots rock, old-time country, rockabilly, zydeco and more.
“Local Spins is a great match with American Routes on Saturday,” Payette noted.
Listeners also can stream IPR online here by clicking on the “All Streams” button.
Local Spins has hosted an hour-long spotlight on Michigan music at WYCE (88.1 FM) in Grand Rapids for the past decade, often debuting new tracks by artists from the Great Lakes State, interviewing Michigan bands and singer-songwriters about their music, and informing listeners about upcoming performances.
The Local Spins website, in turn, publishes feature stories on many of these Michigan artists as a companion piece to the radio show, along with album and concert reviews, show listings, festival coverage and other articles related to the state’s music scene.

“It’s a real honor to add Interlochen Public Radio to Local Spins’ offerings, especially because it helps spread the word about the amazing Michigan artists who continue to produce compelling music in a variety of genres year after year,” said Sinkevics, a lifelong journalist who founded the Local Spins website in 2012.
“Not only that, but so many talented musicians and singers are based in northern Michigan, thanks in part to the world-renowned Interlochen Arts Academy as well as the region’s natural beauty that seems to attract and embrace tunesmiths from across the globe.”
