As a warm-up to Saturday’s Iceman Cometh Challenge mountain bike race outside Traverse City, the Jeff Haas Trio and special guests unfurled originals such as “Turnstyle,” “Tsuris” and “Longetivity” along with other riveting jazz “Tales” for a “Local Spins Jazz Night” at The Alluvion listening room.
A small-but-rapt audience applauded the robust evening of jazz that featured Haas on grand piano, Jack Dryden on bass, Randy Marsh on drums, Laurie Sears on saxophone, Rob Smith on trumpet and watercolor artist Lisa Flahive.
Two days later, the 10-person “Team Local Spins” — sponsored in part by The Alluvion and Athletic Brewing — jazzed up the Iceman Cometh Challenge staged in cool-but-sunny weather amid the northern Michigan woods and fields.

And while it wasn’t the same sort of competition, the past week had several bands and touring artists competing for the attention of music lovers across West Michigan:
L.A. DJ Level Up (at The Intersection’s Elevation), Y-Not and Nathan Walton & The Remedy (at Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill), Kait Rose & The Thorns (at Kalamazoo’s Clover Room), Simply in Time and Sadie VanDuinen (at Muskegon’s Starlight Room), and K’zoo Folklife’s 26th annual benefit for Loaves and Fishes (with Carrie McFerrin/Mike List and Schlitz Creek at Kalamazoo’s Trinity Lutheran Church).
And of course, earlier in the week it was all about Billy Strings and special guests playing a capacity show at Van Andel Arena.
