The app created by Geno Hinton allows listeners to isolate and ‘interact’ with individual instrument tracks within a song, and ‘just be astonished’ at hearing a solo or vocal take.

MuteSolo: Created by a Kalamazoo musician and software developer.
In the age of streaming accessibility across mediums, there are few platforms dedicated to simplifying. A new music app called “MuteSolo,” aims to be one of those.

Designed by Kalamazoo’s Geno Hinton, the app for music consumers and musicians allows the user to isolate specific tracks within a song. This ranges from highlighting only the vocal take, or the drums, or that searing guitar lick you’re learning to play.
For music lovers, it provides a closer look at their favorite artists’ work, marking a new way to appreciate and digest the music. MuteSolo proclaims it will “revolutionize the way people experience music through our Interactive Track Isolation Protocol” and give listeners “unparalleled control over their audio experience.”
For musicians and producers, it’s a chance to break down what’s really going on behind a recorded song. They’re able to dissect each part under an audible magnifying glass. In addition to the free MuteSolo version, the premium MuteSolo Pro lets users mix audio and video tracks.

“It’s a multi-track audio player, and what it does, it allows people to upload multiple tracks to a song. You have the ability to isolate the track, hitting the mute button or the soloing button. So, you get the song, but you have the flexibility to do more with it. It’s moving away from the traditional single file,” said Hinton, who’s originally from Chicago, graduated from Three Rivers High School in Three Rivers and is now based in Kalamazoo.
The new platform, which went public in August, can isolate up to 10 individual tracks. The idea came after Hinton, who’s also a musician, received a rather underwhelming royalty check for his work that had been streamed in multiple countries around the world.
“I’m a musician, and I used to upload my music to Spotify, and all the other digital distributors, and … my music was playing around the world thousands of times, tens of thousands of times. I was geeked when I saw that. Then I saw how much (the check) was for and it was very embarrassing,” Hinton said.
Musicians aren’t the only industry professionals that stand to benefit from MuteSolo. The wave of possibilities washes over to producers, composers who score films, and professionals in the radio and podcasting world as well.
“As a producer, I think that one of the benefits from having multi-track playback is you’ll be able to isolate the sounds, isolate the instruments and tracks, you’ll be able to hear exactly what’s going on. The idea of listening to an a cappella, or a Marvin Gaye song, and just being astonished at what was going on in the background,” said Hinton.
“The industry has to reinvent itself, and I hope with my app, it will help with that, along with giving people something different. A different way to listen to music.”

Hinton said he taught himself based software development years ago. “With the fundamental understanding of that and my background as an audio engineer, I was able to hire a developer to create it,” he said.
The new app is different than other software that’s limited to standard functionalities: volume control, fast forward/backward, play and pause, he noted.
“What sets MuteSolo apart is it enables listeners to interact with music by isolating audio tracks using the mute and solo buttons. In addition, MuteSolo Pro, an upgrade from MuteSolo, will allow users to isolate tracks while viewing music videos and save mixer settings,” he said.
“And because movies have audio tracks, it opens the door for the app to expand into the movie streaming market. This will come in handy due to the app’s ability to upload different languages without disruption of streaming services. Thus making foreign language captions obsolete.”
