January might not seem like an ideal time for music festivals in Michigan, but as tradition has it, the month kicks off with a festival and ends with an even bigger one.
Support our coverage of
West Michigan's music scene
Of course, both of these events take place indoors: Wheatland Music Organization’s Winter Wheat at The Intersection in Grand Rapids on Jan. 10 (with 11 Michigan acts on two stages) and The Ark’s Ann Arbor Folk Festival in Ann Arbor on Jan. 30-31 (with Greensky Bluegrass on Friday, and Amos Lee, Dawes, The Crane Wives, Jon Muq and Rabbitology on Saturday).
In between, it’s a hodge-podge of rollicking concerts across the region, from local favorites to national touring stars. The month also features a bevy of album-release shows by Michigan artists, including Squatch (Jan. 23) and Supo (Jan. 26) at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, The Ghost Bunnies (Jan. 9) at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe and Technicolor/Mar in Color (Jan. 16) at AZO Lounge in Kalamazoo.
And Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. again hosts what it calls the country’s “largest winter festival” with World of Winter that kicks off Jan. 9 and runs through March 1, with a host of family-friendly activities, light shows, art installations, food and performances, including a silent disco on Calder Plaza on Jan. 17 and an ice piano performance at Ah-Nab-Awen Park on Jan. 23 (featuring Olivia Vargas and Charlie Millard). Full schedule here.
Here’s a sampling of other must-see January shows to consider, with a full roster of concerts in the Local Spins Concert Calendar here. And read more about Winter Wheat next week at Local Spins, with a preview of the Ann Arbor Folk Festival here.
