When Jack Droppers & The Best Intentions released their first EP seven years ago, the rock band had no luck getting any airplay for their songs on WYCE (88.1 FM).
That is no longer a problem: The Grand Rapids rock band’s latest album, “Scooter,” soared straight to No. 1 on the Local Spins Hot Top Chart for November, representing the local or regional release that earned the most spins on the Grand Rapids community radio station.
“We are so grateful that anyone would take the time to listen to our music and always hope that our music connects with folks enough for them to share it with others, so it is special to have it played so often on WYCE,” said Droppers, who credited programmers and radio promoter Pirate for helping spread the word about “Scooter.”
He calls it a valuable lesson for young musicians and bands who may face an uphill struggle to showcase their music when starting out.
“Eventually, our persistence was rewarded after (WYCE programmer) Laura Nowe saw us play an open mic and invited us onto her show right before our first full-length was put out,” he recalled.
“All that to say, we don’t take any programmer playing our tunes for granted because we understand that no one owes us anything.”
“Scooter” leads an all-new Top 5 roster of albums for November, with boundary-pushing Free Hat’s “The News From Where You Live” at No. 2, followed by bluegrass band Full Cord’s “Cambium,” Kalamazoo jazz singer Liz Townsend’s “Along the Way” and Americana favorite Roosevelt Diggs’ “Reverie.”
As for Jack Droppers & the Best Intentions, the band — Droppers (lead vocals/guitar), Laura Hobson (vocals), Devin Sullivan (guitar/vocals), Garrett Stier (bass/percussion/vocals), Josh Holicki (drums/vocals) – hopes to book a 2024 tour and play the WYCE Jammie Awards show again.
“I’ll be announcing a solo show on the east side soon, but no tours have been scheduled just yet,” Droppers said. “If you are an artist planning a tour right now and reading this, we’d love to open for you.”
