To say it’s been a long, fruitful and energizing journey would be an understatement.
Since the Aug. 29, 2014 launch of the hour-long Local Spins on WYCE radio show that showcases music by Michigan artists, I’ve aired more than 6,000 songs by local and regional acts — the majority of them on-air debuts of fresh tracks created by a burgeoning pool of songwriters and musicians.
The much-needed exposure of this Michigan-made music to radio and Internet audiences has been enhanced by fellow WYCE programmers who make it a priority to spotlight regional music seven days a week.

Looking back at that first year of shows, it’s fascinating to revisit the diverse range of music unfurled by gifted creatives — from Michigan artists just getting a foothold who would go on to greater national glory to bands that made an impressive splash before moving on to other projects.
The 10th anniversary show highlights just 15 of these artists from across the state — covering a broad range of genres — but could easily have featured dozens more. Consider this just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a music scene that continues to grow and flourish.
The hope has always been that Local Spins on WYCE can offer a meaningful outlet for bands and songwriters to share their art, providing a vehicle for exhibiting their work and satiating listeners’ desire for musical discovery.
That musical discovery has always been the central mission of the Local Spins website (nearing its 13-year birthday), especially when it comes to supporting local and regional artists.
I hope you enjoy today’s blast-from-the-past, nostalgic look back at the formative year of this show and fondly relive some of the music that continues to shape and influence Michigan’s scene.
