At The Intersection’s Elevation, it was all about celebrating the musical invasion of squids from outer space, courtesy of Grand Rapids jam band Desmond Jones, which unleashed a live rendition of its newest album, “Squids,” for an ebullient crowd.
After opening sets by Hannah Laine and Ficus, Desmond Jones didn’t hold back for its traditional Thanksgiving Eve performance, flaunting a memorable set, killer stage design and lighting rig, and having a squid dashing through the audience all night.
At SpeakEZ Lounge the same night just two-and-a-half miles away, it was all about bracing Americana music courtesy of Nashville-based, West Michigan-bred Nathan Kalish and fellow tunesmith Jessica Pounds.
With a crowd of musician friends and fans on hand, the husband-and-wife duo delivered harmony-filled originals along with enticing country-hued covers that included Emmylou Harris’ classic, “Two More Bottles of Wine.” (Up Next for Local Spins Wednesdays & SpeakEZ Lounge: PHABIES at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4.)
The shows kicked off the holiday weekend and closed out an impressive November for live music. Browse the photo galleries below, and check out photo galleries from concerts throughout the month online here.
