Of course, the evening was about more than just “Take Me To Church.”
Irish musician, singer and songwriter Hozier’s massive, debut hit from 2013 closed out the main set at Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena on Wednesday night, a fitting climax to a 21-song set that also brought opener Allison Russell back on stage for the encore’s finale, “Work Song.”
Along the way, Hozier focused plenty of attention on his latest album, “Unreal Unearth,” performing the cuts “De Selby (Parts 1 and 2)” to launch the evening and rolling out renditions of “Francesca,” “Too Sweet” and “Unknown / Nth” along with favorites such as “Almost (Sweet Music)” and “Like Real People Do.”
“It was nearly full; lots of girls losing their minds when Hozier took the stage,” noted Local Spins photographer Chelsea Whitaker. “You could see almost nothing but phones in the air looking into the crowd.”
Canadian Americana tunesmith and Grammy Award winner Russell got the evening started after last playing Grand Rapids in a headlining show at St. Cecilia Music Center in January.
“Russell was fantastic, high energy and emotional,” Whitaker reported.
The Hozier tour makes another Michigan stop on Friday, playing Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston.
