A quick glance at some of the No. 1 albums on the Local Spins Hot Top 5 Chart for 2022 reflects the incredible diversity of Michigan’s music scene.
The year started with a three-month run at the top of the chart by Kalamazoo progressive bluegrass band Greensky Bluegrass, which released “Stress Dreams” in January (and played several Michigan shows later in the year).
That was followed by chart-topping releases from Michigan blues-guitar legend Larry McCray, northern Michigan indie-folk singer May Erlewine, Grand Rapids dream-rock artist Brie Stoner, Alto singer-songwriter Kyle Rasche’s Chain of Lakes and another three-month No. 1 run by Ann Arbor gypsy swing/manouche band Djangophonique.
And to close things out out, Ionia County’s Billy Strings soared to No. 1 in November with his latest bluegrass collection, “Me/And/Dad,” featuring his stepfather Terry Barber.
Of course, the charts representing the local and regional albums that received the most radio airplay at WYCE (88.1 FM) in Grand Rapids just scratches the surface when it comes to the plethora of new music released by Michigan artists in 2022.
Check out reviews of many of those releases here along with a recap of Hot Top 5 Charts from 2022.
