There’s something inescapably uncommon about the GRAM on the Green concert series.
For one thing, the free summertime concerts hosted by the Grand Rapids Art Museum combine visual arts with live music, allowing attendees to not only soak up the strains of a diverse mix of regional bands but stroll a bevy intriguing exhibitions inside the museum, which is open late for the events.
For another, the Thursday night shows are family-friendly affairs held in a unique space – on the Museum Terrace overlooking Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids – with food trucks, dancing and cash bar.
And this summer’s six-week series boasts a vibrant lineup of performers, from uber-popular folk-rock acts such as Traverse City’s The Accidentals and Grand Rapids’ The Crane Wives to hip hop’s The Great Ones, the Latin-infused Cabildo, Grand Rapids DJs SuperDre and Complete VII and Detroit jazz trumpeter Walter White and his band.
“Each year, we aim to provide a diverse lineup of performers that appeal to a wide-ranging audience,” said Elizabeth Payne, GRAM’s communications manager. “My goal is that no matter who you are or what your musical tastes are, when you look at the 2017 lineup, you’ll find a concert you connect with.”
The intriguing roster of artists includes the up-and-coming Accidentals who recently signed a record deal and will release their first album on the Sony Masterworks label not long after the GRAM on the Green concert. The Great Ones features Grand Rapids rappers J. Rob and Lady Ace Boogie, with the latter being featured later this month with release of the first-ever “Local Spins Live at River City Studios” compilation CD, along with fellow GRAM on the Green performers The Crane Wives.
The GRAM on the Green shows – which kick off July 6 with Cabildo and finish up with the Walter White Quartet on Aug. 10 – draw between 700 and 1,000 attendees each week.
“We’re thrilled to have grown the series in size each year,” said Payne, “and expect 2017 to be our biggest year yet.”
