West Michigan's music scene
In Grand Rapids, it was all about a celebrated movie star turned rocker on Tuesday.
In Rockford, it was all about a couple of much-beloved West Michigan rockers raising money for an organization that aids disaster victims.
In both cases, fans were treated to an upbeat night of music that had many fans on their feet on a perfect summer night in Michigan.
Alt-rock’s Dogstar, featuring actor Keanu Reeves on bass, rolled into GLC Live at 20 Monroe on Tuesday night amid great anticipation from many fans, including those brandishing “I Love Keanu” T-shirts.
Kicking off the night with “Blonde,” the band — Reeves, singer-guitarist Bret Domrose and drummer Robert Mailhouse — delivered a set heavy on tracks from the band’s most recent album, 2023’s “Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees,” including “How the Story Ends,” “Overhang,” “Sleep” and “Glimmer.”
Fifteen miles away, meanwhile, the third annual Rotary Rocks for Shelterbox unfurled on a sunny, splendid night at Rockford’s Garden Club Park with performances by rock/rockabilly/blues artist The Reverend Jesse Ray and West Michigan Americana favorites Roosevelt Diggs.
The event hosted by the Rotary Club of Rockford drew the biggest crowd in its three-year history, with fans dancing happily to energetic songs by both acts while also donating money to Shelterbox, which assists disaster victims across the globe by providing them with housing.
During an intermission, the Rockford Rotary presented Shelterbox with an $11,000 check based on last year’s fundraising for the organization. Donate via the QR code online here.
