Mixing intriguing newcomers with returning favorites, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park today announced its 30-concert summer series for 2017, with acts such as The Shins, Brian Setzer, Boz Scaggs, Daughtry, Lifehouse, Switchfoot and Punch Brothers set to play the amphitheater for the first time.
Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Huey Lewis, Diana Krall, Gov’t Mule, Lyle Lovett, The Beach Boys, Andrew Bird, Michael Franti, Bruce Hornsby, Five for Fighting and Lake Street Dive are among stars returning to the series, which kicks off June 4 with Billy Ocean, Starship and Taylor Dayne and wraps up on Sept. 1 with UB40.
Discounted tickets go on sale to Meijer Gardens members at 9 a.m. April 29, with public sales starting on May 13 for a series lineup that the 1,900-seat amphitheater touts as “eclectic” and “broadly diverse.”
The 2017 series leans heavily on returning acts: 20 of the 30 shows feature artists who’ve played the amphitheater before. Indeed, Lovett will be playing Meijer Gardens for the 12th year in a row; The Indigo Girls will make their sixth appearance; The Beach Boys and Garrison Keillor, their fifth. But some of those returning concerts boast co-headliners or opening acts making their Meijer Gardens debut this year, including Joan Baez, Esperanza Spaulding, moe. and Galactic.
This summer’s public sale ticket prices range from a low of $35 for June 9’s St. Paul & The Broken Bones show to $95 for July 16’s Huey Lewis & The News concert. The average ticket price for 2017 is $61.86, a slight drop from the average of $62.50 for 2016. (Those prices don’t include $8 to $8.75 in handling and convenience fees for online and phone orders.)
The lion’s share of concerts, though, sell out to members at a discount before they even go on sale to the general public. Last year, 24 of the 30 shows sold out to members before public sales, with a total of 54,420 people attending amphitheater concerts, making 2016 the most successful series to date, said public relations manager John VanderHaagen.
Meijer Gardens also recently announced a major capital improvement campaign, which includes enhancements to the outdoor amphitheater. The concession building will be replaced, restrooms and bars added, and permanent VIP seating installed, with the first phase of construction starting this fall after the summer concert series wraps up.
“If the capital campaign is a success and all of the necessary funds are raised, construction of the first part of the amphitheater upgrades will start in early September,” said VanderHaagen.
