With a powerful voice and equally powerful messages, Canadian singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards rocked Kalamazoo on Thursday in indie-Americana fashion on tour behind her latest album, “Billionaire.”
And if some of this acclaimed Canadian-turned-Floridian’s music seemed to take a swipe at certain figures in power (“Kings lose their crowns and nobody wants to stick around” on “When the Truth Comes Out” or “The hustle gets you high, line your pockets with gold” on “Save Your Soul”), it only added to the urgency of her performance at Bell’s Brewery Eccentric Cafe.
Her 18-song set featured a half-dozen tracks from her 2025 album as well as her first single, 2003’s “Six O’Clock News,” and 2013’s “It Must Have Been Love,” finishing up the encore with a cover of Tom Petty’s “Crawling Back to You.”

The concert came the same night that country singer John Morgan brought the tour behind his latest album, “Carolina Blue,” to The Intersection’s Stache in Grand Rapids, and two nights after Utah rock/pop outfit Neon Trees lit up Elevation with songs such as “Teenager in Love” and “Animal.”
On Saturday night, Grand Rapids jazz fusion band Candid Antics added a Halloween touch to its album-release show at Midtown in Grand Rapids, while rock’s Lower Leisure Class and Wowza rattled the rafters at Bell’s in Kalamazoo.
Meanwhile, at The Alluvion in Traverse City, Michigan’s own Lindsay Lou and her Honey Moon Trio delivered a melodious evening of music at mid-week along with The Wildflowers.
And speaking of mid-week, Local Spins hosted a Wednesday show at Grand Rapids’ SpeakEZ Lounge starring The Local Commuters, who released their debut EP earlier this year, and a Friday pre-Halloween affair starring Garbage Angel, who had folks dancing in the aisles to a variety of semi-creepy selections.
