West Michigan's music scene
West Michigan’s transition from June to July offered plenty of notable, music-driven affairs that tantalized fans, even amid heat, mugginess, rain and forest fire smoke:
• Toad the Wet Sprocket and Marcy Playground revved up the first sold-out show of the season at the recently revamped Bell’s Brewery Beer Garden in Kalamazoo, followed the next night by another sold-out show in the Back Room featuring Kansas City blues-rock guitarist Samantha Fish, Jesse Dayton and Eric Johanson;
• Two rising Americana heroes — Texas singer-guitarist Charley Crockett and Allegan County’s favorite son, Myron Elkins — steamed up the summer “Rock the Lot” series outside The Intersection in Grand Rapids on Friday;
• Day 2 of the Smiling Acres Music Festival outside Trufant dodged a few raindrops on Saturday to boast a headlining set by Traverse City alt-folk stars The Accidentals (who recently returned from an overseas jaunt to Croatia), as well as performances by Desmond Jones, Stella, Deerfield Run, Jesse Ray & The Carolina Catfish, Eric Engblade, Normal Mode and more.
