If there was ever a festival that embodies the ethos of “you’re either attending or planning for your attendance,” it might be Detroit’s can’t miss Movement Electronic Music Festival.
Set in downtown Detroit every Memorial Day weekend since 2000, the annual pilgrimage to techno’s “Mecca” as I have previously referred to it, recently dropped its 2025 lineup teaser.
At the top of that list is techno’s elder statesman, Carl Cox, performing a hybrid live set.
“Movement is a techno institution in Detroit so for me, it’s like reuniting with an old friend,” Cox declared in a Movement press release. “I’m going to make up for the years I’ve missed with a show that’s going to send Detroit to another dimension.”

Closing out the weekend is electronic music’s most in-demand artist, Chicago’s John Summit.
I can already hear the purists bemoaning the inclusion of Summit, but it helps to remember Monday night is often reserved for what could be viewed as unconventional bookings for Movement. Fat Boy Slim, Public Enemy, Snoop Dog, have had appearances in years past.
Summit is known for showcasing different artist personalities at times (this is an absolute strength btw), and will likely descend upon Detroit as what is affectionally referred to as #TechnoSummit.
In between those two festival titans will be a weekend of top-shelf artists along with up-and-comers: first-time performers such as the UK’s garage sensation Sammy Virji; Italy’s techno star Anfisa Letyago; UK’s Drum & Bass trailblazers Chase & Status, and Berlin’s rising star DJ Gigola.
Festival favorite Klanguestler — along with Detroit Techno pioneers Carl Craig and DJ Minx — round out the first wave of performer names in what’s certain to be a banner year for upwards of 100,000 attendees over three days.
