One concert attendee raved that the “place was on fire” Sunday night.
Cage the Elephant made a triumphant and ultra-exuberant return to Grand Rapids to close out the weekend, bringing its “Neon Pill” tour to GLC Live at 20 Monroe with support from Vlad Holiday and Hey, Nothing.
The last time the Kentucky alt-rock/indie-rock/pop band pumped up Grand Rapids, vocalist Matt Shultz was relegated to a knee scooter with a broken foot and he still rolled wildly all over the stage.
This time around, in full health, Shultz turned into a jumping bean, leaping at every turn. The sold-out crowd met his energy enthusiastically, singing loudly and waving phone flashlights in unison.
“Tonight’s rivaling the show from two nights ago, and honestly, two nights ago was the best show of tour,” Shultz declared at one point, gleaming with joy from the spirited reception the band received.
He also reminded the audience of one of his favorite things about his “job” as a musician: “We give you guys an excuse to lose yourself. Scaffolding for the party. Build yourself to lose yourself. Let’s lose ourselves and find something in return, how about that?”
Kicking off the evening with “Broken Boy” from 2019’s “Social Clues,” the band performed all of the fan favorites, spanning Cage the Elephant’s 17-year discography, including “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” “Trouble” and “Cold Cold Cold.”
Shultz’s brother and guitarist Brad Shultz didn’t miss an opportunity to connect with the audience, jumping over the barricade to interact with fans, and later, putting on a show of smashing a guitar on stage.
The night closed with “Back Against the Wall,” “Shake Me Down,” “Cigarette Daydreams” and “Come A Little Closer,” completing a 21-song fusillade that concertgoers won’t soon forget.
