Hard to believe, but it’s the final show in Meijer Gardens’ summer series. Labor Day brings this multi-platinum-selling rock band from Pennsylvania led by singer Ed Kowalczyk. The band racked up a string of big hits between 1994 and 2003, including “Selling the Drama,” “Lightning Crashes,” “Lakini’s Juice,” “Turn My Head” and “The Dolphin’s Cry.” As a result, LIVE has sold more than 20 million albums globally and still draws a devoted, nostalgic fan base for its concerts.

Consider this a robust back-to-school concert for Calvin College students.
Nashville’s Johnnyswim – a duo featuring the married couple of Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez – has turned heads with its wildly entertaining mix of soul, blues, folk and pop, best experienced live, something the group will do to kick off this season’s Calvin College concert series. (Sudano, by the way, is the daughter of the late Donna Summer.) The band is crisscrossing North America on its “Forever on Your Side” tour. get tickets online here.

The rock band is touring behind its full-length debut album, “High Water 1,” released in early August.

In some ways, this is an extension of the recently completed Tribute Month for Local Spins Wednesdays at SpeakEZ Lounge. That’s because JMM Jazz Trio specializes in Rat Pack vocal jazz, featuring songs from Sinatra, Martin and Davis as well as Bobby Darin, Nat King Cole and more. The band is led by singer Diego Morales with Wally Michaels on piano and Tom Taylor on drums. The guys provide plenty of humor between songs for a memorable evening that will take you back in time.

This is rightly regarded as the granddaddy of Michigan music festivals and one that’s been entertaining folk fans since 1974. But Wheatland has certainly expanded its repertoire of musical offerings over the years, really embracing all varieties of American roots music. This year’s event is no exception, with organizers snagging an eclectic blend of national/international stars as well as local heroes.
Performers this year include John McCutcheon, Darell Scott, Thornetta Davis Band, Joe Hall & The Cane Cutters, Nora Jane Struthers, Corn Potato String Band, Steppin’ In It, Altan, Front Country, Town Mountain, Charley Crockett, Kittel & Co. and Las Cafeteras.
