When: 8 p.m. Tuesday
Tickets: $58-65
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
English indie-rockers Alt-J made a quick splash with their 2012 debut album, “An Awesome Wave,” and the currents have continued to push band members Joe Newman, Thom Sonny Green and Gus Unger-Hamilton along pretty favorably ever since. The band’s most recent and third studio album, “Relaxer,” has been described as “all-over-the-map” musically by Under the Radar and “deeply gorgeous and utterly baffling” by The Daily Telegraph.
They’ve been touring the globe behind the new project since June, heading to Canada later this week. British-born and Los Angeles-based indie-alt-pop artist Bishop Briggs opens the Grand Rapids show. Get tickets and details online at 20monroelive.com.

The band plays its final shows with Lavengood on Friday and Saturday on the east side of the state, at Ferndale’s Otus Supply. Get tickets and details about the Spring Lake show online at pindropconcerts.com, where you can also find info about Tuesday’s concert with All Strung Up, Wednesday’s show featuring the return of Lee DeWyze, Friday’s appearance by Ari Hest and Saturday’s concert by Porter Nickerson.

THIS WEEK’S LOCAL SPINS TICKET GIVEAWAY: Congratulations to Local Spins reader David Dean. Come back to The Big List every week for your chance to win concert tickets.
Traverse City’s The Accidentals have been traversing the country hard and this week return to Michigan from a national tour to officially celebrate their Sony Masterworks debut album, “Odyssey.” West Michigan fans have a couple of opportunities to embrace this fast-emerging, young and talented indie-alt-folk group, first at Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo and then, on Friday, at Muskegon’s fetching Frauenthal Center.
The Frauenthal Center show will also boast sets by Grand Rapids folk-rock band The Crane Wives and singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jake Allen (who also performs with The Accidentals). CROWDER, JIMI CRAVITY
THE YOUNG ESCAPE
When: 7 p.m. Friday
Tickets: $30
Where: Covenant Fine Arts Center, Calvin College, Grand Rapids
In the four years since successful The David Crowder Band dissolved and Crowder moved from Texas to Atlanta, Ga. to launch his “folktronica” solo musical career, he’s put out two CDs and an EP. A single, “I Am,” from 2013’s “Neon Steeple, reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Christian Songs chart. Another song, “Come As You Are,” snagged a 2015 Grammy nomination. So it turns out this music, which on his website David Crowder describes as “front porch hand and foot music with ones and zeros,” is the real deal. Crowder follows up his May gig at Rock The Coast West Michigan in Holland with this visit, which is in support of CD No. 2, “American Prodigal.”
Opening are Jimi Cravity, whose faith was shaped by his toddler son’s battle with liver cancer, and the four Johns siblings of The Young Escape. Tickets are available online here.

MURDER PARTY
NO/BREAKS
THEE ELDER GODS
When: 9 p.m. Saturday
Tickets: $5
Where: Tip Top Deluxe Bar & Grill, Grand Rapids
As these guys put it, Grand Rapids rock/punk masters Murder Party “started their killing spree on Halloween 2011” and have cavorted with their “love of horror and heist films, rock ‘n’ roll and a punk rock bite” ever since. The band celebrates its sixth birthday with the usual horrific Halloween hoopla and help from No/Breaks and Thee Elder Gods.
Suffice to say, creepy costumes are encouraged for this 21-and-older show. Get more info online here, along with the lowdown on Friday’s show featuring The Holy Warheads, Moto and Emma Loo & Sam, 9 p.m., $5.
DINOSAUR JR.
When: 9:30 p.m. Saturday
Admission: $10
Where: Founders Brewing, Grand Rapids
Dinosaur Jr. at Founders Brewing? You bet. And that makes this one of the must-see concerts of the week. Originally unleashed in the mid-1980s, the J Mascis-fronted Dinosaur Jr. is regarded as a pioneering alt-rock powerhouse, weaving punk, feedback and classic rock hues into its attack. After reuniting about a decade ago, the Boston band – which also features Lou Barlow and Murph – has released four albums, including 2016’s “Give A Glimpse of What Yer Not” (which earned high critical praise).
Opening the Grand Rapids show will be Easy Action. And as with all Founders shows, there are no advance ticket sales – just plan to line up early to pay the $10 admission if you want to get in. By the way, this is the only Michigan stop on the band’s current national tour.
THE BALLROOM THIEVES
When: 7:30 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: $22-$32
Where: Seven Steps Up, Spring Lake
Boston-based folk trio The Ballroom Thieves arrives in Spring Lake to cap off what may be Seven Steps Up’s busiest week of the year. The band revolves around the cello and voice of Calin Peters, with guitarist Martin Earley and percussionist Devin Mauch. Their latest recording, “Deadeye,” dropped one year and one week ago, a raw look at the stresses that a heavy touring schedule puts on bandmates and friends. Music blog Ear To The Ground called it “fantastic,” adding that The Ballroom Thieves “push the boundaries of Americana music in such meaningful ways.”
Find tickets for The Ballroom Thieves show online here. And while you are at pindropconcerts.com, get the lowdown on the rest of this week’s amazing line-up: All Strung Up, 7 p.m. Tuesday; Lee DeWyze, 7 p.m. Wednesday; Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys, 7:30 p.m. Thursday; Ari Heist, 8 p.m. Friday; and Porter Nickerson, 8 p.m. Saturday.
BEN FOLDS
TALL HEIGHTS
When: 8 p.m. Sunday
Tickets: SOLD OUT
Where: 20 Monroe Live, Grand Rapids
Pianist Ben Folds is a mastermind of musical wonderment, a virtuoso who never stands still musically while swinging from power pop to classical musical to rock to jazz with uncharacterizable charm – aided by a unique sense of humor and spectacularly entertaining stage shows. He’s performed with alt-rock’s Ben Folds Five, with symphony orchestras, with his own top-notch band. So, it’s no surprise this concert would sell out quickly, especially with the mesmerizing Boston electro-folk duo Tall Heights opening the show.
The prolific Folds recently released the six-track “So There Piano/Vocal” EP after releasing the “Live in Perth” album earlier this year. This tour is billed as the “Paper Airplane Request Tour,” so you can guess what that will involve.
