ArtPrize doled out its 2013 awards amid TV hoopla, but the weekend also boasted a dazzling and sweaty Bassnectar show, Domestic Problems at Rosa Parks Circle and more — captured in photos and video at Local Spins.
The flurry that is ArtPrize is suddenly winding down, even though it seems like it just began.

But the international art competition’s climactic final weekend went out amid an explosive musical volley: Downtown Grand Rapids streets were jammed with record crowds, generating the largest audience yet for the two-week-long Art Van/WOOD TV8 Concert Series at Rosa Parks Circle, with Domestic Problems delivering a rousing finale performance on Friday night.
Meanwhile, Lucas Wilson, Karisa Wilson and more entertained those gathered down the street in a city garage for the official ArtPrize awards ceremony. And everywhere along the way, it seems, buskers sporting everything from guitars to violins to accordions to saxophones provided a soundtrack of sorts for all those passersby.
Nothing, however, may have been as wild, woolly, boisterous and sweaty as Saturday night’s Bassnectar concert at the DeltaPlex Arena in Walker, with thousands romping to the EDM strains of innovative DJ Lorin Ashton. Photography Anthony Norkus called the scene “nuts” and way muggy to boot: “It literally was like a sauna in there.”
Elsewhere, the Pat McGee Band regaled yet another sold-out crowd at Spring Lake’s Seven Steps Up, and dozens of bands cranked up the volume at 14 halls for the annual Pulaski Days celebration across Grand Rapids.
Some sad news, though, cast a shadow over the weekend: Longtime music promoter and Orbit Room owner Don Dorshimer, who I counted as an ardent supporter of LocalSpins.com, passed away, though his legacy continues. Read more in this Local Spins story.
