With a new EP set for release later this year, Traverse City’s The Accidentals stopped by Michigan House-Austin during South by Southwest this week to record a new song. Listen to it here.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Five Michigan-connected “house bands” are recording songs this week at Michigan House-Austin during the South by Southwest music conference and festival. All of the songs will be entered into this year’s international ArtPrize competition and one band will be chosen by a panel of experts to win $5,000 and perform at ArtPrize 2016’s opening concert. Local Spins is highlighting each song this week as part of its 2016 coverage of Michigan bands at SXSW.

Last year’s South by Southwest experience had such an impact on The Accidentals that it inspired the band to write the song, “There’s Too Much Noise on 6th Street,” born of staying in a rented condo on noisy 6th Street during the raucous music festival and conference in Austin, Texas.
If Wednesday night’s official SXSW showcase here in downtown Austin is any indication, the band might be inspired to write yet another compelling piece of music.
The band’s official SXSW showcase Wednesday night on the 18th floor of Austin’s Hilton Garden Inn not only drew a large, rapt audience but one which thoroughly embraced the Traverse City’s trio’s wide-ranging set, a set that featured new originals and covers ranging from The Beatles to Rush, with Grand Rapids hip hop artist Rick Chyme joining in for “Parking Lot.” (Check out some photos from that performance below.)
After finishing their 40-minute show by playing a classically hued piece acoustically, back-to-back in the middle audience, Savannah Buist, Katie Larson and Michael Dause were nearly mobbed by happy fans who also snatched up free Accidentals merchandise at the back of the room.
And if the day couldn’t get any better, it did with VinylMag.org putting The Accidentals at the top of its list of “Acts to Watch” at SXSW 2016.
It’s the sort of impact the band hopes to continue making here and elsewhere, especially after it releases a new EP in June. Here’s a sneak peek into that new recording, with this version recorded earlier this week at Michigan House-Austin.
