Popular Chicago pop-punk band the Plain White T’s will open the Aug. 27 concert presented by Blue Cap Entertainment.
“It’s a good three-band mix and we’re pretty happy the tour is stopping in Grand Rapids,” said Dan McCrath of Blue Cap.
Headliners for the other concerts in the Aug. 26-28 series haven’t been announced, though they will be soon, McCrath said.
Racking up 14 Top 10 singles on a variety of charts and releasing 10 studio albums since 1987, the platinum-selling Goo Goo Dolls have been a pop music mainstay, known for their ubiquitous hits “Iris,” “Black Balloon,” “Slide” and “Here is Gone.”
It’s the second year in a row that Daughtry, the alt-rock band led by “American Idol” star Chris Daughtry, will perform at Fifth Third Ballpark: The band played in front of a throng of 9,000 during the Rock the Rapids festival last August (with Lifehouse and the Jessica Price Band also on that bill).
Since then, Daughtry – which has four No. 1 hits and four Grammy nominations to its credit – has released its fourth studio album, “Baptized,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart and has featured the singles, “Waiting for Superman,” “Long Live Rock & Roll” and “Battleships.”
“We’ve got great experience with Daughtry,” said McCrath, referring to the successful turnout for last summer’s show. “We had messages from people saying you should bring them back.”
TICKETS FOR ‘AN AWESOME SUMMER NIGHT’ ON SALE AT 10 A.M. THURSDAY
In a prepared statement about the bands’ summer tour, Goo Goo Dolls frontman John Rzeznik called it “an awesome summer night” of American rock music: “Not only are we big fans of Chris, but we think this is going to be a huge party for the fans of both our bands.”
Although this summer’s three-day concert series isn’t affiliated with the Rock the Rapids festival (which is on hiatus for 2014 after being held at Fifth Third Ballpark and in downtown Grand Rapids), it will have a similar vibe to last year’s event which also took place at the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps minor league baseball team.
McCrath said the concert experience at Fifth Third Ballpark is one “which the community seems to embrace pretty well, so we want to keep doing that. We were doing it before Rock the Rapids and we’ll continue doing it.”
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 27, with The Plain White T’s (“Hey There Delilah,” “1, 2, 3, 4”) taking the stage at 6:30 p.m.
General admission field tickets are $39, box seats are $32 and reserve bench seats $26. A limited number of center stage general admission tickets are available for $49. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Fifth Third Ballpark box office, 4500 West River Drive in Comstock Park, by calling 616-784-4131, or online at fifththirdballpark.com or bluecapentertainment.com.
