When Breakaway Music Festival returns to Grand Rapids in mid-August, it will light up Belknap Park with some of electronic music’s rising stars, including Grammy Award-winning German producer Zedd, Canadian mid-tempo bass artist Rezz, melodic house DJ Gryffin and trap’s ISOxo.
The Michigan festival unfurling Aug. 15-16 will feature 20 national touring acts and four regional DJs (Beau Cruz, DELATO, Lowke and Riink), part of Breakaway’s ever-expanding lineup of 12 music festivals taking place across the country this year.
In partnership with MiEntertainment, Breakaway Michigan has hosted summer festivals at Belknap Park since 2017, with Marshmello, Slander, Louis the Child, Alison Wonderland and more firing up last year’s event. (View Local Spins coverage of the 2024 festival here.)
Tickets for Breakaway, starting at $134, go on sale Thursday at breakawayfestival.com.
Breakaway co-founder Zach Ruben called Grand Rapids “a second home to Breakaway. Our partnership with MiEntertainment has been invaluable and we’re excited to continue to build on the incredible support the city and the locals have shown us. … The talent we’re bringing to headline our Breakaway Michigan festival in the heart of Grand Rapids is nothing short of elite.”
Zedd tops this year’s lineup with his chart-topping anthems “Clarity” and “The Middle. San Francisco’s Gryffin’s organic house originals will play well in W. Michigan, but he is also known for chart-busting remixes of Maroon 5 and Tove Lo.
The Canadian/Ukraine producer Rezz has had a couple of banner years. While her sound is hard to pin down, the mid-tempo bass/techno originals that garnered the attention of Deadmau5’s Mau5trap label a decade ago will likely play well at Belknap Park.
San Diego-based trap artist ISOxo’s (pronounced eye-so ex-oh) freshman EP “Nightrealm,” was met with critical acclaim from coast to coast.
Other notable acts worthy of mention from an old house-head like me are Disco Lines, Omnom, VNSSA, and Wax Motif. New this year is the founder of the massively popular Instagram page DJ Lovers Club — Bobby Hendrickson, as he is now the official host of all Breakaway events.
