From a poignant tribute to a beloved concert promoter to a Springsteen tribute in Casnovia to a Zappa tribute at The Intersection to a tribute to a new fall beer, live music was humming … and captured in photos at Local Spins.

It can no longer be denied: Fall is here.

I can tell because Founders Brewing’s Harvest Party — with a bevy of bands — fired up on Saturday in Grand Rapids, not to mention the fact that we’re into Week 6 of the NFL season and the Detroit Tigers have already wrapped up Game 1 of the American League Championship Series by nearly no-hitting the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Amazing.
But I digress: This weekend’s photo gallery kicked off on Thursday with the opening salvo in the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center’s concert season — Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin (read the Local Spins review here) — and a jam-packed benefit show/Bruce Springsteen tribute at Half Moon Bar & Grill in Casnovia, with Mark Lavengood, The Crane Wives and more raising more than $1,200 for the YWCA and Safe Haven.
That was followed by another series opener: Fauxgrass delivering their bluegrass punch at Grand Rapids’ Bethlehem Lutheran Church as part of the MAJIC Concert Series raising money for worthy causes. The fun continued with the aforementioned Harvest Party (which included performances by The Appleseed Collective and Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys), the return of guitar phenom Dweezil Zappa and Zappa Plays Zappa at The Intersection and folk fave Joel Mabus playing the Grand River Folk Arts Society’s Acoustic Saturday Night show at the Wealthy Theatre Annex.

There was also time for sadness and reflection, remembering the contributions of music promoter and Orbit Room owner Don Dorshimer at a memorial service on Friday. With a soundtrack ranging from The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm” to Johnny Cash’s “When the Man Comes Around,” it was an emotional and unique tribute.

Hey John, I was planning on going to the BoDeans show at Wealthy Theater this week. From recent pics / videos I’ve seen, Sammy Llanas is absent! I’ve always thought of them as the cooler roots version of Hall and Oates, and would miss Sammy’s vocals. Is he NOT involved with this tour?
You are correct. Llanas left the band a couple of years ago.
